Inquisition is not your typical black metal group, by any means.  The sheer power of their classic ‘Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult’ is a pillar of dark stone against a stormy and lightning struck sky for the black metal genre. Originally released after the 2nd Wave of Black Metal, in 1998, when the genre was starting to bloat with corpse -painted copy-cats, ‘…Infernal Regions…’ cut a long and twisted slash through the paper-skinned-pretenders to the throne.

I have always enjoyed South America’s contribution to extreme metal.  Originally from Columbia, Inquisition’s founder and key songwriter, Dagon, relocated to the United States just before the initial release of ‘…Infernal Regions…’.  Around this time, Inquisition moved away from their more thrash-oriented roots and  fully realized their true black metal capacity and set to work on ‘…Infernal Regions…’. The 10 songs coalescence to form a phantom black metal masterpiece, tied together with spoken word samples detailing an initiation into the Domain of the Devil…

What I enjoy about this release is contradictory to what I love about S. American metal…it sounds more Scandinavian to me and, mind you, these guys have been located in the States for more than 10 years!  Occasionally, the driving rhythm section reminds you of classic thrash, such in the  bridge of the dirge ‘Those of the Night’, the battery of ‘Empire of Luciferian Race’ or the relentless domination of the instrumetal title track. But give me a song that is more haunting, more atmospheric and aptly named than ‘Solitary Death in Nocturnal Woodlands’? Inquisition manifest their dark spiritual force for this funeral march, proving that many will aspire but few will ever come close…

Dagon’s monotonous vocals are to some, no doubt, dismissive and weak…I say ‘Bullshit’!  I think the vocals are a breath of fresh air in a tomb that has been sealed far too long with other vocalists that tend to be a dime a dozen showing little variation in style or delivery. The intoning chant of ‘Satan Lives’ creates a parallel reality filled with shadow from which the listener can find no escape…

Released in deluxe Digipak CD and double LP by Hell’s Headbangers Records on June 23rd, 2010, ‘Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult’ is not an album to miss out on. Remastered and featuring new cover art by painter Antichrist Kramer, ‘…Infernal Regions…’ also includes an extensive packaging layout to possess your soul.

Inquisition is also working on a new full length album, ‘Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm’, to be released by No Colours and HHR…a demo is available at their MySpace page…Satan Lives in Inquisition!!!
