Supuration hail from France, always a hotbed of eclectic and experimental underground metal. Their latest release “Cu3e” on Listenable Records continues their long traditional of bizarre and surreal songwriting mixing a myriad of sounds and a plethora of styles. Wow, I don’t think I could conjure up more adjectives than that if I wanted to!

Give us a brief history of the band. What far-off planet were you on before settling in France?

Well, we started the band in 1990, quickly we recorded a maxi cd «sultry obsession», then a promo tape in 1991 (several 7’eps came out on different labels throughout usa, germany, mexico….) And in september of 1992 we went in studio to record «the cube» our first album (out in february 1993) , we went on tour with bands like suffocation, konkhra, carcass, napalm death, cannibal corpse, benediction….and during 1994 we recorded the mcd «still in the sphere». Then we formed S.U.P, same members but different style of music, we recorded «anomaly»(95), «transfer mcd»(96), «room seven»(97), «the cube remixed»(98), «chronophobia» (99), «anomaly 2000 re recording and re edition»(2000), «angelus»(2002), and during 2002, we thought that it would be a good thing to record a prequel of «the cube» called «incubation» under the name of SUPURATION…the album came out during february 2003 exactly 10 years after the first album «the cube», at that time we decided to make a trilogy with a third album that we’ll make in 2013 dealing with the end of the story, during that time we’ve been recording albums for S.U.P like «imago»(2005) , and «hegemony»(2007), and now «cube 3» in 2013. We’re coming from the north of france close to belgium.

I can’t really compare your sound to anybody else; who influences these indescribable melodies?

A lot of things like science fiction or fantastic movies or novels, we ‘ve influenced by bands like carcass, old pestilence, voivod, entombed, industrial bands like godflesh or early pitch shifter, we’re into depeche mode or new wave of the 80’s…

Are there any non-metal and rock acts that inspire the band? There must be!

Yes, bands like depeche mode, pink floyd (i know that’s strange but…), the sisters of mercy, old the cure, and stuff of the 80’s in general…

So there’s another band called S.U.P…. with the exact same members. I’m confused (well, not really, but I’ll pretend for argument’s sake!), what exactly is the difference here?

The music of S.U.P is darker, groovy, each album has its own concept and story, SUPURATION is more «death metal», we kept the same  style for 20 years and it’ s dealing with a whole story extended over 20 years, in a way, S.U.P is more experimental, we can try anything with S.U.P and we can’t with SUPURATION which will stay SUPURATION for us.

What different emotions behind the different types of vocal arrangements?

We used to create emotions with the vocals since the very beginning of the band. I mean, in any music you can hear, mélodies are quite important, in the music itself and also in the vocals, i think it’s important for us…

Please explain the meaning of the recurring theme of the cube to a lay person like myself.

2003 «incubation» prequel of «the cube», a young girl is rapped in the street by several bad persons, she’s depressive, and pregnant, she don’t talk to her mother and comitts suicide, after killing her baby in her own body…
1993«the cube», next step, the metaphysical journey of «incubation girl»’s soul travelling through strange unknown places including cubes and spheres, this soul is judged by a sphere, judged to live again, to be reincarnate..
2013«cube 3», end of a story, the reincarnation of the soul in outer space, in a baby who will be educate by cubic and spherical machines and robots…

You’ve got over  twenty years of history as a band yet only three full-lengths and several singles, demos, and various other releases that don’t qualify as full-length albums. Is there any particular reason for this?

We worked a lot with S.U.P during these years, we like to put out different things cd official bootlegs and dvd bootlegs, there’s no particular reason for this…

So does that mean you’ll have six albums when the band has been around for forty years, or what are some future plots the band is scheming?

No, i don’t think we’ll have six albums in 2033…«cube 3» is the end of the story, of course we’ve not finish with SUPURATION, we’ve a lot of things to do like gigs, boots, dvds, vinyls, re edition of our ancient release with new masterings….

What’s with all the “official” bootlegs and their bizarre numbering system?

We put out 16 cd/cdv/dvd  bootlegs ’till now , and two very official dvds boots called «traces part one» and «traces part two» including lives, video clips, short films, the official cd boots are quite limited, exclusive for fans, il guess we’ll put out 20 boots and then we’ll see…

This is your first release on the venerable Listenable Records. How is it all working out?

Very good, serious job, we know listenable since their very beginning, we’re proud to work with them, it’s a good thing for the band…

What a Supuration live show like, other than I’m assuming a complete and other mindraping of the audience?
We are quite static on stage, quite good light show and video on stage, red coloured and no light on our faces,  i suppose the audience is sometimes surprised, cause that’s sometimes like a movie and sometimes hypnotic…join SUPURATION on our website or utube…

What songs would you like played at your funeral? Or will you rather be stuck in a portal to another dimension forever with any sort of formal, dignified burial?

For the song, i’ll choose «imago» from S.U.P’s album «imago», anyway, i’d rather think that the end is not really the end…we’ll see..
